Pearl FALCO is proud to play a part in sharing the premiere screening of THE PEARL LEGACY at the 2023 Japanese Film Festival in Singapore on 26 November 2023.
The film was produced by Tomoaki Azuma, proudly born and raised in the birthplace of cultured pearls, Ise Shima, Japan. Maiko MAKITO, CEO of Pearl FALCO, organized “The Pearl Legacy” movie preview in Singapore, marking this event’s first occurrence outside Japan. This endeavour, supported by the Embassy of Japan, Japan Creative Centre, and Singapore Film Society, strives to share the allure of Akoya pearls and the charm of Ise Shima with the world.
When directly translated from Japanese, the film’s title is “Who Does Your Parent’s Money Belong To?” For the Singapore Premiere, Maiko named the movie THE PEARL LEGACY to raise awareness of these wonderous gems from nature, born with human love and devotion.
This film is especially relevant today, with climate change drastically affecting industries worldwide. Ise Shima is no exception; over 80% of local oysters have been negatively impacted by climate change, significantly affecting Akoya pearl production in the region. THE PEARL LEGACY embodies our hope to raise awareness of a not-often-discussed industry, promote sustainability, and preserve the beauty of Akoya Pearls for future generations. In this story, portrayed by Tomokazu Miura as Sento, with Mako Ishino as Mitsuyo, they have been spending their whole life, love, and effort for one Akoya pearl set in beautiful Ise Shima. The naming of the story is a bet on how to pass on these feelings and efforts to the next generation, contemplating “the Pearl Legacy.”
THE PEARL LEGACY is a heartwarming story featuring Harumi Ogame, who plays the role of an IT Worker at a company in Tokyo, returns to her hometown following her mother’s death and discovers a hidden legendary pearl worth 600 million yen in the possession of her father, Sentaro. As a lawyer and the family vie for control of the valuable treasure, unexpected truths emerge amid the turmoil.
Pearl FALCO is honored to have been featured on The Business Times for again, this time on the first page of the 28th October 2023 issue, written by Tan Su Yen. Featuring the current challenges faced in the Akoya Pearl Farming industry, as well as sustainability and environmental issues that everyone should be aware of.
“To ensure the continuity of our abundant natural heritage, traditional culture, and industries for the next generation, we aspire to spread awareness of the beauty of Ise Shima through this film to as many people as possible. By capturing interest, we aim to contribute to preserving the marine environment, boosting the tourism industry, and passing on our cherished traditional culture.”
– Masayoshi Hashizume, Mayor of Shima City
“Watching a film that brings us to discover underrated gems is heart-warming. The Pearl Legacy takes us deep into the pearl farming industry, which is Ise Shima’s cherished traditional culture. I hope that people will watch this film and experience the beauty of Ise Shima on their own.”
– Akiko Kawabe, Japan Creative Centre Director
“We are delighted, both professionally and personally, to have the Premiere of this beautiful movie at our Japanese Film Festival this year. Its significance is uniquely deep because of the subject matter. It is the first time a Singapore-based, Japanese-owned company has collaborated with Japan-based acting, production, and directorial talent to create a memorably multicultural story.”
– Kenneth Tan, Singapore Film Society Chairman
