Black Pearls in Ancient Cultures

Ancient China. Since ancient times, the Chinese have associated pearls with spiritual energy, wisdom, prosperity, power, immortality, thunder and the moon. Who among us doesn’t find the endearing Dragon Dance, where the Dragon pursues wisdom and strength in the form of a pearl, a ‘life lesson’ for all of us to consider on a regular basis?

Ancient Babylon. The Ancient Babylonians conceived of pearls being formed when rainbows met with the earth. The first black pearl arrived on earth when one of Marduk’s thunderbolts, the ancient Mesopotamian Deity of Thunderstorms, struck the rainbow where it landed.

Ancient Polynesia. The Polynesian God of War Oro was said to have descended to Earth riding a rainbow to present humankind a black pearl oyster as a gift. During Oro’s Earthly Journey, Oro fell in love with Princess Bora Bora, sharing this unique Black Lipped Oyster as a gift and symbol of his eternal love. To this day, as Oro is also honored as Polynesia’s God of War, the black pearl symbolizes both power and eternal love.

How Polynesia brought Black Pearls to the World

In the 16th and 17th centuries, as European Explorers were charting the world’s oceans, they were the first to discover beautiful and unique black pearls, born from the Black-Lipped Pinctada Margaritifera Oyster in the French Polynesian Atolls in the South Pacific Ocean.

Soon thereafter, French traders began exporting Black Pearl Oysters for cultivation back to Europe.  200 years later, as sustainable pearl cultivation techniques were fully developed in Ise Shima Japan, increased demand for black pearls gave rise to Black Akoya Pearls and Black South Sea Pearl variants.

Black Pearls Are Symbols of Power Prosperity and Eternal Love

Black Pearls, being highly sought after for centuries, only the most powerful were able to come into possession of these rare natural born treasures, symbolism of which is observed up to the present time. Coupled with how Black Pearls fit so well with gold, silver, platinum, diamonds and other gemstones, incorporating black pearls into your Personalized Jewelry Designs is not at all difficult, black pearls often playing a ‘main character role’ in so many jewelry designs.
