The Mid-Autumn Festival 中秋节. A Grand Asian Tradition

The Mid-Autumn Festival “中秋节,” also known as the “Mooncake Festival,” is when family and friends gather together under a full moon. The Mooncake Festival is considered one of the most important holidays in the Chinese Calendar, practiced for at least 3,000 years.

The Mid-Autumn Festival 中秋节 is held on the night of a full moon, or the 15th day of the 8th month of the Chinese Luni-Solar Calendar, this year Saturday, 10th September, a celebration under the light of an “Autumnal Harvest Moon.”

Among the most popular delicacies shared during this festival are Mooncakes,” a rich pastry typically round in shape, filled with sweet bean, egg yolk, meat, lotus seed paste, and various fillings with different artistic impressions intricately scrolled and baked onto the surface of the cake, illustrating the many legends of the festival. The Moon Festival is also a time for family reunions. In Chinese, “round” has a similar pronunciation to “reunion.”

During the Mooncake Festival, followers present mooncakes as offerings to the Moon Goddess – Chang Er – flying to the Moon – cause for celebration, sharing brewed Chinese tea and mooncakes with relatives and friends for good wishes. Paper lanterns of all sizes and shapes are carried and displayed as symbolic beacons to light people’s path to prosperity and good fortune.
