Unlike diamonds, which obtain their unique sparkle through cutting and polishing, pearls shine naturally – like shining babies born from mother oysters. Each pearl is born in nature and truly unique with no 2 pearls being exactly alike.
Assessing the Quality, Luster & Color of Each Pearl
While no 2 pearls are exactly alike having been cultivated in nature, all pearls are selected and evaluated based on 7 separate criteria. The uniformity of pearls in a design is a key factor in appraising pearl jewelry. This evaluation process is known as ‘matching,’ and ‘harmony’ is a term used to describe the intersection of matching and uniformity.
Harmony. In the case of a pearl necklace strand – the color, size and quality of each pearl must be well-balanced and matched well for its design. The thoroughness of a designer’s matching process is the key to evaluating a pearl necklace as a whole and among the best determining factors in appraising the value of the pearl necklace.
Luster & Color. Akoya pearls are well known for their high luster with their white reflective soap bubble surfaces. From deeper within the pearls themselves, colors like pink, blue and yellow can be perceived.
All Pearl are unique and it’s not easy to see each difference, especially luster through photos.
Akoya pearl necklaces range in price from around $1,000 to $10,000 or more depending on the quality and size. It’s not easy to show the luster which is the most important value of pearls through photos.
