What an honor to be featured in Men’s FOLIO Singapore, Men’s Fashion and Luxury Lifestyle Media, #TheObsessions, where both local and global creatives share their inspirations & obsessions. The interview touched upon some of Maiko’s personal details.
These days many of our Singapore customers are men shopping for their loved ones or for themselves, or women shopping for the men in their lives. Some of the most popular luxury pearl jewelry in mens’ fashion today are Pearl Rings and Bracelets. It brings us great pleasure to see our customers deepen their understanding of pearls here in our gallery and choose pearls with their own eyes. If you would like to learn more about pearls, we welcome you to click the WhatsApp Icon at the bottom of the screen, or reach out to us via our Contact Page.
We wish to share our knowledge of pearls so that more people can better appreciate luxury pearl jewelry as lifelong legacy gift items, meant to be passed on from one generation to the next with your love and memories.
About Maiko Makito
Maiko first took the helm of Pearl FALCO in 2016 and expanded the Pearl FALCO footprint into Southeast Asia with the opening of our Singapore Gallery in 2019.
Before assuming the reins of Pearl FALCO, Maiko had the opportunity to backpack across different territories and continents while still in college, allowing Maiko to learn so much about communities and culture throughout Eurasia. Technology was not as omnipresent as it is today. While it may be getting increasingly difficult to recall a world without the internet and social media …, Maiko found those days to be wonderfully special, with nature, the local people and herself sharing a big beautiful sky. Maiko found these experiences to be revelatory in teaching her the importance of life with people sharing a common bond beyond languages and cultures.
While trekking through Eurasia, Maiko decided to join the NEC Corporation, having been lured by the opportunity to work in developing countries. It was that fateful decision that landed Maiko in the Asian metropolitan hub of culture, Singapore, and there was no turning back afterwards. Maiko resigned from NEC in 2016 and took over the family business while tending to her children and building a new home in Singapore. All the different aspects of Maiko’s life were coming together, like an intricately woven pearl necklace, initially requiring lots of attention and care, but then comfortably becoming a part of Maiko’s persona.
Maiko continued to travel to Himalayan Villages every year up until the arrival of COVID-19, founding the PEARL of HOPE Project, an educational fund for underserved children that is supported by sharing the beauty of Akoya Pearls with the rest of the world.
Akoya Pearls are definitely the first on Maiko’s list! In the family of pearls, Akoya pearls are best known for their roundness and high luster. While Akoya pearls have been sustainably cultivated for almost 150 years on Ise Shima Japan, climate change is posing enormous challenges to continued cultivation. This drives Maiko to work harder than ever to pass on the beauty of Akoya pearls, one of the great historical and cultural traditions of Japan to the rest of the world.
Ise Shima Japan is Maiko’s hometown, an island paradise with wondrous natural beauty, steeped in great cultural traditions. While Ise Shima may be best known as the birthplace of cultured pearls, it is also the location of Ise Jingu, or Ise Grand Shrine. Ise Jingu is one of the most significant Shinto Shrines in all of Japan, where the Sun Goddess Amaterasu resides. Looking at this image, Maiko reflects on how caring for Ise Shima for present and future generations is now part of her life’s work.
From Pearl FALCO’s SHIZUKU Design Series, Maiko treasures this design and considers it a must have piece for her daily wear. The Ancient Romans were passionate about pearls and described a pearl as a “Moon Drop, or SHIZUKU.” Like a raindrop falling into a river and flowing to the ocean, we wish to deliver drops of pearls born in Ise Shima to the world. The SHIZUKU Designs interpret love as a pearl dewdrop cradled by a crescent moon, just as a mother oyster cares for her baby pearl.
Maiko travelled from Asia to Europe by land on 3 different routes. Maiko found these experiences to be revelatory in teaching her the importance of life with people sharing a common bond beyond languages and cultures. The travels inspired Maiko to launch programs such as “Pearl of Hope,” helping underserved children gain access to an education they so richly deserve.
Maiko cherishes opportunities to trek in Eurasia, with nature, the local people and herself sharing a big beautiful sky. Our feelings, our happiness or sadness, our keenness for living in the moment, are proof that we are alive. Maiko always enjoys her road trips, whether Maiko is staying in the villages or the feel of the wind while hitching a ride from one of the locals. Life is a wonderful journey.

Baroque or Keshi Pearls come in irregular shapes and are very unique. With no 2 pearls ever being exactly alike, this is what makes Baroques and Keshis so extraordinary. These days, Baroque, or irregularly shaped pearls, or Keshi Pearls, pearls formed without a nucleus, are increasingly popular because of each pearl’s singularity. Baroque and Keshi Pearl Designs are excellent choices for men’s casual wear in any season.
