Gold South Sea Pearls Are Such Remarkably Versatile Gemstones
It should come as no surprise that whenever Gold South Sea Pearls are included in a Pearl FALCO Jewelry Design, they can’t seem to help but play a leading role, as if Gold South Sea Pearls are the ‘Alpha Pearl’ of the Design. Pearl FALCO’s Gold South Sea Gold Pendant and Gold South Sea Gold Station Necklace Designs demonstrate this principle in this year’s Summer Sensations Collection.
A Brief History of South Sea Pearls
While South Sea Pearl cultivation before the Industrial Revolution is not fully understood, what is known is that Pinctada Maxima Oysters were discovered off the coast of Australia in the 1880s.
Within three years of the original discovery, 75% of the world’s supply of mother-of-pearl for making shirt buttons originated from the West Coast of Australia. Surprisingly, pearls found in oysters at that time were considered bonuses to the divers!
Between 1880 and the 1950s, Australia’s love affair with Pinctada Maxima Oysters and South Sea Pearls was challenged more than once, as economic demand nearly brought ecological collapse to the region.
In 1956, the Australian Government stepped in to help maintain sustainable cultivation in the region. Today, Australia produces about 60% of the world’s South Sea Pearls, with other large cultivation hubs in Indonesia, the Philippines, and French Polynesia.
A Brief History Of Jewellery As Personal Adornment
Jewellery as adornment dates back at least 150,000 years. Since then, jewellery has served various purposes, including ceremonial or religious articles, charms for protection and warding off bad luck or malign entities, and even symbols of status and power. It was not until the late 19th Century that necklaces and pendants were worn as accessories to enhance one’s appearance.
During the Paleolithic Era, necklaces were made of feathers, bones, and shells bound by plant material and were used as identification between tribes. Necklace designs continued to evolve as they began being made with sturdier, more finely crafted options such as metal chains.
Some of the earliest pendant designs have been found in Ancient Egypt and Mesopotamia. Pharaohs used charms to depict the Eye of Horus, a symbol of great importance in Egyptian culture and religion. At the same time, amulets made of Lapis Lazuli, Gold, and Pearls were discovered throughout the region of Ur, believed to be worn by the ancient Sumerians for protection against forces unseen.
The Ancient Greeks may have been among the first to add pearls to their necklaces, with some of the earliest pearl necklaces found in archaeological digs in Ancient Crete. In Ancient Rome, pearl necklaces bore extreme significance so much that Julius Caesar decreed that only those of royal blood could wear any pearl jewellery.
