Wedding Traditions in Singapore
In Japan, it is customary for daughters to receive a pearl necklace and earrings on their 20th birthday, in anticipation of wearing treasured jewelry at a future wedding and for other occasions, ceremonies and special days in their lives.
In Singapore many of our customers choose pearls for their daughter’s or daughter in-law’s weddings. Pearl jewelry is also locally popular for Si Dian Jin (四点金) or as a traditional Chinese wedding gift – a set of jewelry, composed of pearl earrings, necklace, a ring and bracelet. In addition, more often than not, many of our customers first visit to choose pearl jewelry for the wedding bride. They return later to choose pearl jewelry for the mothers of wedding couples, so they too can commemorate the special day for their children, a legacy gift item to be passed down through the generations. Pearls are one of the only accessories that are considered suitable for mourning as well as for once-in-a-lifetime celebrations. Since pearls are likened to tears, they are highly suitable to be worn during trying events and funerals. However, some colors, shapes, and lengths are not suitable for formal events. What kind of pearls are appropriate and welcome on other occasions?
Ceremonial Occasions
Although pearls can be used as formal wear for ceremonial occasions, it is important to consider what kind of pearl better applies to certain events. In wedding ceremonies, the general rule is not to wear accessories that are as gorgeous as the bride’s. Colors such as white, pink, gold, baroque and black (black pearls may be associated with funerals) pearls are considered generally appropriate
Arrangements of Layered Necklaces
Layered necklaces are recommended not only as a single item, but they could also be coordinated with other accessories. Layered necklaces express, “happiness overlapping.” Along that same theme, oftentimes simple classic pearls with gold chains or different sizes of pearls can be a good combination.
Length
Shorter necklaces are generally more formal. Choker type or 40cm long is considered to be a standard length.
Other Occasions
Daytime weddings … sparkling gemstones may not be suitable
As the sun shines brightly in the daytime, it is recommended that the accessories should not glitter too much.
Evening weddings … string and fabric may not be suitable
A simple baroque pearl necklace is casual.
Guests or family members, with the exception of the bride, of course, should probably avoid wearing large gems or items that are too flashy.
