Akoya pearls have been cherished for their lustrous beauty and timeless elegance for centuries. Still, it wasn’t until the late 19th Century that sustainable pearl cultivation practices were invented and fully implemented in Ise Shima, Japan.
As one can appreciate, pearl oysters are sensitive marine organisms. From the birth of oyster larvae to the harvesting, a cultured pearl takes time, typically about four to six years. The pristine and rich ecosystem of Ise Shima Japan offers pearl oysters the nutrients, water quality and shelter they need for healthy growth. It is vital to producing high-quality Akoya pearls.

Akoya Pearl Cultivation Starts with Planting a Tree
The most beautiful pearls come from healthy oysters born and raised in a robust, living and breathing ecosystem. Every effort is made to keep the island inlet waters in and around the pearl farms of Ise Shima Japan pristine. These marine conservation efforts include a restriction on overfishing and efforts to minimise plastic pollution. These efforts directly impact the oysters’ health and have an even more holistic effect on marine conservation and the farms’ environs.
Marine conservation efforts lead to the growth and protection of the marine environment and the many different fish species that call it their home. These, in turn, provide essential nutrients for oysters and help pearl farms produce beautiful pearls.
Pearl oysters also filter water as they feed, improving the water quality around a pearl far. A single adult pearl oyster can filter up to 50 gallons of water per day and, in doing so, remove pollutants from water, including excess nitrogen, which leads to algae growth, lowering the water’s oxygen levels and adversely affecting all marine life.
Pearl cultivation is a sustainable source of income. Saltwater pearls are a much-coveted luxury gem; top-quality pearls command high prices in the jewellery market.
It also adopts different economically sustainable practices that aim at reducing wastage and making the best use of every part of the pearl oyster. Cultured Pearl Cultivation is a 100% sustainable aquaculture, requiring several years to produce a single Akoya pearl. While only 28% of cultivated pearls will be incorporated into jewellery, the remaining pearls will be crushed into powder and used for cosmetics and medicines. The oysters are recycled to produce compost or fish food. The shells will be used to make buttons. The adductor muscle of the pearl oyster is not just a culinary delicacy but a nutritious food source. All these practices help make pearl cultivation economically sustainable.
The Challenges We All Face. Thankfully, We Face Them Together
As one would expect, climate change is not favouring Akoya pearl cultivation. Ise Shima Japan is undergoing demographic, cultural and environmental changes, as are many parts of the world. The largest concerns for Ise Shima and surrounding communities include declining numbers of experienced pearl farmers and rising ocean temperatures due to climate change. As of the early 2020s, Akoya pearl production has decreased rapidly and is now 1/10th compared to decades past. In the last two years alone, 80% of Akoya oysters perished due to ocean water temperature changes.
