Baby Akoya Pearls Range In Size From 2 To 5mm
Baby Akoya pearls require the same time and effort as larger Akoya pearls. For this reason, some pearl farmers choose not to focus on Baby Akoyas because the larger Akoya pearls have greater value. Still, Ise Shima, with its long history of Akoya pearl cultivation, some of our pearl farmers choose to cultivate Baby Akoyas in limited quantities. In addition, Baby Akoya Pearl Jewelry is becoming increasingly popular these days.
A single Baby Akoya pearl can be simple and elegant, perfect for day-to-day use. Baby Akoya pearl jewelry designs are also especially popular for their synergistic designs, and their easy integration with other jewelry.
Ise Shima Japan is where today’s sustainable cultured pearl industry began. Not only pearl cultivation – Ise Shima supports harvesting, cleaning, processing, grading and crafting, all of which is still done by hand. During this process, each pearl is touched in some way more than 3,000 times before it is displayed in a gallery. To date, the grand art, culture and tradition of Ise Shima’s pearl industry continues to thrive on Ise Shima.
Why Are Akoya Pearls So Special?
Many of our customers ask us about what makes Akoya pearls so special? Akoya pearls remain a classic pearl of choice. Renowned for their brilliant luster and rich colors, Akoya pearls symbolize elegance and timeless beauty. Akoya oysters are cultivated in the calm clean ocean waters of Central Japan with its regularly anticipated 4 seasons.
Akoya Pearls Typically Range In Size From 2-10MM
Akoya Mother Oysters are typically smaller than Freshwater or South Sea Oysters. The size of an Akoya Mother Oyster is similar to a small child’s hand. Akoya pearls typically range in size from 2 to 10 mm, most commonly ranging between 6 and 8 mm in diameter, with 10mm Akoya pearls being among the rarest.
Akoya pearl cultivation is a challenging profession. From Baby to Adult Oyster, it takes about 3 to 4 years. Once the Oyster reaches maturity, a nucleus is inserted into the body of the Oyster, and it takes another 1 to 2 years to form 1 fully cultured Akoya pearl. Even after 5 to 6 years of diligent cultivation, less than 30% of fully cultured pearls can be used for jewelry. Even before COVID-19, climate change and the decline in the number of local pearl farmers was impacting Akoya pearl production, now only at 1/10th the output of prior decades.
