To date, even with the latest technology available, naturally born pearls are still evaluated one by one by experienced expert human eyes.
Unlike diamonds, which obtain their unique sparkle through cutting and polishing, pearls shine naturally – like shining babies born from mother oysters. Each pearl is born in nature and truly unique with no 2 pearls being exactly alike.
Assessing the Quality, Luster & Color of Each Pearl
While no 2 pearls are exactly alike having been cultivated in nature, all pearls are selected and evaluated based on 7 separate criteria. The uniformity of pearls in a design is a key factor in appraising pearl jewelry. This evaluation process is known as ‘matching,’ and ‘harmony’ is a term used to describe the intersection of matching and uniformity.
Harmony. In the case of a pearl necklace strand – the color, size and quality of each pearl must be well-balanced and matched well for its design. The thoroughness of a designer’s matching process is the key to evaluating a pearl necklace as a whole and among the best determining factors in appraising the value of the pearl necklace.
Luster & Color. Akoya pearls are well known for their high luster with their white reflective soap bubble surfaces. From deeper within the pearls themselves, colors like pink, blue and yellow can be perceived.
All Pearl are unique and it’s not easy to see each difference, especially luster through photos.
Akoya pearl necklaces range in price from around $1,000 to $10,000 or more depending on the quality and size. It’s not easy to show the luster which is the most important value of pearls through photos. If you are able to visit our Singapore Gallery in person, you will be able to see and compare pearl necklaces on display with your own eyes. Caring for Your Pearl Jewelry: Tips to Preserve its Beauty and Elegance
Pearls, the remarkable gemstones born in nature and nurtured with human love and devotion, possess a timeless allure. Unlike costume jewelry, cultured pearls, composed of calcium carbonate, are truly natural and one-of-a-kind. At Pearl FALCO, we understand the significance of preserving your pearl jewelry’s beauty and ensuring its longevity. With that in mind, we present essential reminders and suggestions to help you better care for your precious pearls, safeguarding their radiance for generations to come.
1) Perspiration and cosmetics left on the surface of your pearls will cause them to lose texture and roughen their surfaces over time. After wearing, be sure to wipe them with a soft dry cloth and store your pearls on their own, away from other harder jewelry surfaces like diamonds or other gemstones.
2) So as to better avoid potentially damaging your pearl jewelry, be sure to apply perfume and hair spray before wearing and setting your pearl jewelry.
3) Be sure to store your pearls in cool dry, non-airtight containers, and be sure not to expose your pearls to direct sunlight or ultraviolet rays such as fluorescent lights, extreme dryness, moisture, and insect repellent.
4) Be sure to remove your pearl jewelry before getting into the bathtub, shower, or pool. Too much moisture can damage your pearl jewelry. Chemicals in shampoo and soap can dull the pearls’ luster. Chlorine in swimming pools causes pitting in the surface of the pearls.
By following the above guidelines, we expect your pearl jewelry will be a part of your life for a very very long time. Maybe not just for one but for multiple family generations. If your pearl jewelry requires additional care, restringing, etc.

Pearls symbolize loyalty, integrity, generosity, and purity, making them a fitting choice for your engagement. Pearls are currently the most trendy engagement ring centerpiece because of their simplicity, elegance and versatility – a perfect choice for an engagement or wedding ring.
Be it engagement or wedding rings, pearls have symbolized commitment, love, devotion, and status throughout history. In fact, in the past, a ring was presented as a gift to a prospective spouse as a token or deposit to show a man’s promise to marry a woman. Today, a ring is presented as an engagement gift by a partner to their presumptive spouse directly after a marriage proposal is accepted, symbolizing a formal agreement to a future marriage.
The circle of the wedding ring symbolizes eternal love through time. Wedding ceremonies commemorate that special day, an agreement to love and cherish one another for the rest of their lives after holding hands together while walking down the aisle.
As a pledge of love to one another forever, wedding rings have different connotations in different cultures and religions. Some rings highlight the day of the marriage. The couple accepts the ebb and flow of their relationship and vows to stick together during good and bad times, while other rings are crafted in the name of true love.

This is what Pearl FALCO strives for, so that each and everyone of our valued customers has a wonderful pearl jewelry story to tell now and to future generations.
Whether for formal or casual wear, white pearl earrings are quite popular these days. With multiple genuine pearl choices to choose from, whether Freshwater, Akoya or South Sea pearls. So what are some of the differences?
Freshwater Pearls vs Akoya Pearls and South Sea Pearls
Freshwater Pearls constitute 97% Of Worldwide Pearl Production, and China is the world’s largest producer of freshwater pearls.
Understandably, while freshwater pearls are appreciated for their lower prices, the reducednacre density causes freshwater pearls to change color over time. Freshwater pearls also tend to be far more brittle and less durable than saltwater pearls, which makes saltwater pearl jewelry more desirable as multi-generational legacy gifts of choice.
Akoya Pearls are Beautiful and Round Thanks To Hard Work and Devotion
Akoya pearls are cultivated in the beautiful and calm ocean waters of Ise Shima Japan. Taking years to mature, with almost half of the mother oysters not surviving the years long cultivation process due to their susceptibility to environmental changes. A single mother oyster will produce only one pearl in her lifetime.
From baby oyster to mother oyster, it takes approximately 3 to 4 years. From the seeding of the mother oyster to pearl harvesting, it takes another 1 to 2 years, so approximately 4 to 5 years in total. During that time, pearl farming demands daily observation and care, just as all mothers devote to their own children. Of the fully cultivated and harvested pearls, fewer than 28% of fully cultured pearls will be used for making jewelry. The rest are ground into powder and used for medicines, herbs and cosmetics.
Akoya Pearls and South Sea Pearls
Both Akoya and South Sea Pearls are saltwater pearls, appreciated as lifetime legacy gifts to be passed on from one generation to the next, as symbols of love and memories through time. The luminous soft inner glow of South Sea pearls is born from South Sea oysters, cultured primarily in the South Pacific. The main difference between Akoya pearls and South Sea pearls is Luster and Size. Akoya pearls have the highest luster among pearls but are relatively smaller, while South Sea Pearl sizes tend to be much larger than other pearls, largely due to the warmer South Pacific Oceans. In terms of Luster and Brightness, Akoya pearls are said to shine like Mirrors while South Sea pearls are said to shine like Silk.
Saltwater Pearls and Their Value Over Time
While the price of saltwater pearl earrings is understandably higher than freshwater pearl earrings, saltwater pearls are more highly regarded worldwide because of their higher valued qualities. Born in nature, all pearls are unique and special and no two pearls are exactly alike. To date, pearls continue to be evaluated one by one with expert eyes. Value is determined solely by the quality of each pearl.
When considered in the context of pearl earrings, Akoya & South Sea pearl earring studs can range in cost from a few hundred to a few thousand dollars, depending on the size, luster and uniformity of the pearls in the design.
Hold On To The Saltwater Pearl Earrings You Are Purchasing Or Already Own
It goes without saying … pearls are that gemstone that comes back into fashion over and over again. We are currently seeing a resurgence of interest in pearl jewelry, so hold onto what you are purchasing and/or what you currently have.
While long Akoya pearl strands are currently perceived of as more formal jewelry, many of our customers are layering their longer pearl strands with other necklaces, or looking at restringing their long strands into more contemporary designs. As noted above, the value of the pearls themselves is key to estimating their long-term value. Should long Akoya pearl strands and/or other design concepts come back into fashion, you can always restring the pearls again. Saltwater Pearls Are For Life.
We welcome you to join us at one of our Pearl Appreciation Workshops to deepen your understanding of pearls, so you can see pearls ‘up close and personal’ with your own eyes. We also welcome questions about what pearl jewelry you may already have, wondering about value, or whether you are considering making multiple custom designed pieces from a single strand, etc., custom design, being among Pearl FALCO’s specialties.

In 1946, Ise Shima was designated as a National Park in the hopes of maintaining its pristine and natural landscape.
The jagged coastline with countless bays and deep inlets are sprinkled with islets that add charm to the area and make it a highly favorable location for cultivating pearls.
The Grand Shrine of Ise Jingu – a National Heritage Site, pearl rafts, and female divers known as “Ama” enhance the spectacular scenery and add to the character of Ise Shima. This exquisite balance between the natural landscape and a rich cultural history makes Ise Shima National Park such a wonderful place to visit.
We are honored to introduce Ms Candice Soon, artist and teacher, a native of Singapore currently living in the USA, who created inspired paintings of Ise Shima Japan for Pearl FALCO. Candice Soon’s latest rendering of Ise Shima to the left is posted publicly here for the very first time. The paintings below are on display at our Pearl FALCO Singapore Gallery.
Many of ourSingapore Gallery visitors who comment on the paintings below find it hard to believe that Candice has not yet visited Ise Shima. Nonetheless, Candice is able to beautifully interpret Ise Shima as if she had lived there most of her life.
Why Is Ise Shima Considered the Birthplace of Cultured Pearls?
From 1888 to 1906, a sustainable means of cultivating beautifully round cultured Akoya pearls was developed at Ago Bay on Ise Shima. These techniques and practices were later shared with the world and were the foundation of the worldwide pearl industry we recognize today.
Once a sustainable means of round pearl cultivation had been discovered, a vertically integrated pearl cultivation industry came to life and continues to this day on Ise Shima. A multi-year process, from pearl cultivation to harvesting, cleaning, processing, grading and the crafting of luxury pearl jewelry. The next time you are able to visit a Pearl Falco Showroom, you will better understand what it means when we share how each pearl on display has been ‘touched at least 3000 times.’
We at Pearl FALCO believe works of art, whether luxury pearl jewelry or Candice’s paintings of Ise Shima, connect Ise Shima Japan with Singapore in a uniquely positive way, transcending cultures and languages. Thank you Candice!
If you would like to learn more about Candice Soon’s artwork, Candice invites you to reach out to her directly at candicesoon@gmail.com.

June’s birthstone is the pearl, highlighting a pearl’s timeless beauty, treasured by women of all ages throughout time. The ancients of the Middle East conceived of pearls as teardrops from heaven. The Chinese fancied that pearls came from a dragon’s brain. Christopher Columbus and his contemporaries thought that mollusks formed pearls from dew drops.
In fact, a pearl is born naturally from a mother oyster as she covers an irritant with nacre. In 1888, the Japanese began sustainably reproducing Akoya oysters in Ise Shima. In 1906, 8 short years later, a method to produce perfectly round pearls had been developed, a practice later to be shared with the world.
Pearls are typically associated with purity, humility and innocence. So it has been said that the June birthstone represents “sweet simplicity.” As such, pearls were traditionally given as wedding gifts. June was traditionally the most popular month to marry, not only in Japan but in several countries and cultures. The reason is that the Ancient Roman Goddess Juno – for whom the month of June is named – was the protector of women in all aspects of life, and especially in marriage and childbearing, so a wedding in Juno’s month of June was considered most auspicious.
The pearl birthstone is also thought to have beneficial properties. In ancient times, pearls were said to bestow long life and prosperity. In Asia, pearls were believed to help alleviate indigestion and hemorrhages, and have been used in Traditional Chinese Medicine over the centuries.
Pearls were once described in rare terms like “Mermaid Tears” and “Moon Dewdrops,” having been treasured since ancient times. In that early era, the technology was not available to cut and polish gemstones like diamonds, but pearls were intrinsically and naturally beautiful enough without human intervention, which helps to explain peoples’ long term love affair with pearls and their reasons for valuing them so highly.
Pearls are the only living gemstone, born in nature, cultivated with peoples’ love and devotion. Each pearl is unique. No two pearls are exactly alike. All pearl jewelry shares a common origin, as the ‘children’ of mother oysters. Once cultivated, artists and designers devote so much time and focus into crafting jewelry from those pearls. Like all luxury jewelry, pearls have a distinctive timelessness about them. The sharing of pearl jewelry with loved ones – loved ones who may ultimately share the jewelry with future generations. Pearl jewelry is such an extraordinary expression of the human bond of love shared through time.
In such trying times, as we feel seperated due to travel restrictions, Pearl FALCO is perceiving an even greater appreciation for pearls. Pearls connect us. Pearls are art in themselves, with each work of pearl jewelry having a different journey, from cultivation to crafted art. Each piece is created to be part of an individual’s life. This is what Pearl FALCO strives for, so that each and everyone of our valued customers has a wonderful pearl jewelry story to tell now and for future generations.
Maiko Makito, Co Owner of Pearl FALCO was recently featured in one of Singapore’s most popular lifestyle Magazines,‘A Magazine.’ Maiko wishes to personally thank the ‘A Magizine Team’ for the article. Without their support, this endeavor would be so much more challenging. Thank You A Magazine Team!
As we are all recovering from travel restrictions over the last year. All of us are intent on getting back to normal as soon as possible. In this article, Maiko shares her passion and mission as a business owner and leader during these challenging times.
Pearl FALCO, a company headquartered in Ise Shima Japan, the birthplace of today’s sustainable Akoya cultured pearl aquaculture, is on a mission to share the beauty of cultured pearls with the world. Pearl FALCO strives to be so much more than just a luxury pearl jewelry seller. Over the last several years, as Maiko has been managing 2 retail locations in Japan and 1 in Singapore, Maiko has come to better appreciate how pearl jewelry binds families through multiple generations, playing a role in making long cherished memories for people throughout the world. Pearl Jewelry is Forever.
The Pearl FALCO story becomes even more interesting. Unlike so many other concerns, the sale of luxury jewelry also allows Pearl FALCO to give back in a very unique way. Since the founding of the company over 30 years ago, Pearl FALCO has been actively supporting local communities and children throughout Asia. Maiko has a great passion for contributing to society at large, with programs such asPearl FALCO’s “Pearl of Hope Project,” helping underserved children gain access to education through tuition assistance. Above and beyond taking the helm of her family’s business, one of Maiko’s ‘big dreams’ is to see that children throughout Asia have access to affordable education.
We hope you will consider joining us, learning to enjoy, “a life with pearls”
In a brand new article published in Startup.Info, Maiko shares her passion for contributing to society at large, with programs like Pearl FALCO’s “Pearl of Hope Project,” helping underserved children gain access to education through tuition assistance.
Maiko also shares how Pearl FALCO strives to be an innovator in the field. Maiko conceptualized an annual pearl jewellery competition, “The Grand Prix of Akoya Pearl Jewellery Ise Shima,” an annual jewellery competition to raise awareness of the importance and versatility of pearls. 2021 will mark the 4th Year of the Competition. Year after year, Maiko Makito continues to be truly humbled, receiving multiple entries from wonderfully talented young designers from around the world.
Thanks to so many, Pearl FALCO is looking forward to another successful year in 2021! We hope you will join us!

Traveling to Ise Shima Japan
Ise Shima is located in Mie Prefecture Japan. Many of you may have already visited Kyoto Japan. Mie Prefecture is next to Kyoto, Nara, Shiga, Aichi and Gifu. From North to South, Mie is 180km and approximately 108km East to West. In terms of area, Mie Prefecture (5,774 sq km) itself is about 8 times the size of Singapore (724.2 sq km).
Not only is Mie Prefecture famous for Ise Shima – the storied Ninja tradition was born in the City of Iga. and Kumano Kodo in Mie Prefecture is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Even more than this, Formula 1 racing fans may already be well aware, the Suzuka Circuit is also located in Mie Prefecture.
Some folks ask why Ise Jingu has not been designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site, even though Ise Jingu dates back over 2000 years? As Ise Jingu is the oldest and most sacred Shinto shrine in all of Japan, the Japanese people think of Ise Jingu as the ‘Soul of Japan.’ A world heritage site designation would be a secondary consideration at best. For this reason, the Japanese government has not applied for UNESCO World Heritage Status. Planning Your Visit to Ise Shima
When planning your visit to Ise Shima, for a more traditional Japanese long weekend getaway, we recommend staying at least 2 nights at a resort hotel or ryokan near the ocean. Ise Shima is most easily accessible by car, so we recommend renting a car for your stay on the island. Many tourists rent a car at Kashikojima Station (Shima City) and return it to Ujiyamada Station (Ise City) or vice versa.
From the Yokoyama Observatory, you can experience the expansive view of the Ria coast at Ago Bay, the birthplace and home of cultured Akoya pearls. This is where sustainable cultured pearl farming techniques were first developed and then later shared with the world.
Meoto Iwa are 2 sacred rocks symbolizing a married couple. The 2 rocks are tied solidly with shimenawa, a rice straw rope typically hung at shrine entrances. The rope is replaced every year on May 5, September 5 and in mid December when the tides are calm. If the weather is good, you might even catch a glimpse of Mount Fuji if you are lucky. Meoto Iwa is an extremely popular location for couples of all ages, praying for marital bliss.

‘Ise Grand Shrine,’ or Ise Jingu holds a very special place in the hearts of the Japanese people. Ise Jingu is the oldest and most sacred Shinto Shrine in Japan. One of Japan’s most sacred sites, where the Sun Goddess Amaterasu Omikami resides.
Ise Jingu Shrine covers an area of over 500 square kilometers, with over 1500 rituals conducted on Ise Shima annually, to pray for the peace and prosperity of the Imperial Family and the Japanese People.
All buildings and monuments at Ise Jingu are rebuilt every 20 years over at least the last 1300 years. This continuous rebuilding plays an important role in the transfer of technical skills, spirit and devotion to Japan’s cultural heritage from one generation to the next. As of today, over 62 generations of Japan’s great craftsmen and builders have visited these sacred grounds, devoting their decades of experience and knowledge to future generations of craftsmen who have yet to be born.
What makes Ise Jingu such a unique architectural wonder is how it is built in traditional Japanese timber frame construction. Without a single nail, Ise Shrine has withstood so many natural disasters over the last 1300 years.
This continuous re-building serves another very specific purpose. In the course of re-building, Ise Jingu shares pieces of prior construction as divine treasures to be reused at other Shinto Shrines throughout Japan.
Japan is proud to be understood as among the world’s first ‘forest conservationist cultures.’ Wood is central to Japanese civilization and the concept of sustainability and reutilization. Unlike other cultures, Japan is not blessed with extensive natural resources. Because of this, Japan continues to pursue sustainable options like reforestation and technological innovation while maintaining generational sharing of know-how and skills, now and into the future.
The Importance of Ise Jingu
This generational re-building of buildings and structures at Ise Jingu is how the Shinto Faith embraces the dedication of Ise Jingu, a belief system that embraces both human impermanence and eternal time.
5 Major Tenets of the Shinto Tradition
Purity. We are born on this earth, beautiful and pure in spirit. Through lifes’ adversities, we strive to remain pure and beautiful in spirit to ourselves, our loved ones and each other, the way of the kami.
Sincerity. ‘Makoto,’ or Sincerity of the Heart. Without sincerity and acts of good faith in our hearts, acts of false intent or purpose are meaningless and more harmful than helpful.
Harmony with Nature. Seeking harmony with the way of the kami, taking care of the environment is a primary Shinto concept. In the Shinto tradition, a kami is thought of as a living force in a higher dimension. The concept of kami is sometimes applied to spirits that live in things, and it is also applied to the things themselves.
Festivals. (Matsuri) Shinto Festivals both large and small, celebrated throughout Japan every year,. serve to bind communities together with spectacular and sublime time-honored festivals from one generation to the next.
Living in the Moment. The Shinto tradition is focused on the present. In the Shinto tradition, life is a celebration of what we know and what we have right now. The Shinto tradition insists on present awareness, versus regrets of the past or anxiety over a future as yet to unfold. The Shinto tradition sees the future as yet to be written. We are the composers of our own lives. Meeting the moments of our lives with preparation is the way of the kami.

常若 “Toko Waka”- The Eternal Youth of the Pearl Industry
Due to climate change and the decline in the number of local pearl farmers, Akoya pearl production has been declining rapidly, now at 1/10th of past production levels. As recently as 2019, 80% of Akoya oysters died due to ocean temperature changes. Of those pearls, even after several years of diligent cultivation, fewer than 30% of harvested cultured pearls can be used for jewelry. Ise Shima covers not only pearl cultivation, but supports harvesting, cleaning, processing, grading and crafting, all of which is still done by hand. The grand tradition of the Japanese pearl industry is alive and well, started and remains in Ise Shima, Japan.
常若 “Toko Waka” – As we can see “Eternal Youth” and “The Eternity” of Ise Jingu, we wish to pass on this great tradition and the art of our Japanese pearl jewelry to future generations.
Japanese people continue to worship the Sun Goddess, Amaterasu OmiKami, worshipped as a founder of Japan and Ancestor of the Emperor. It’s the almost same size as Paris, in France. What is less well known is how Ise Jingu is the main hub of the Shinto Faith, comparable in size to the Vatican in Rome Italy, orMecca in Saudi Arabia. In throughout the year, people from all over Japan, including Japan’s Prime Minister and Members of the Japanese Royal Family visit Ise Shrine annually.
If You Want To Experience History, Culture, Beautiful Scenery And Of Course Great Food, Ise Shima Has It All.
Ise Jingu (A National Heritage Site), pearl rafts, and female divers known as “ama,” dive for abalone and turban shells – of course to eat! And don’t forgetMatsusaka Beef, the most famous beef in Japan as yet to be exported, which only enhances its value.
This exquisite balance between the natural landscape and the rich cultural history makes Ise Shima uniquely appealing. We are very much looking forward to your visit to Ise Shima post COVID.
