Maiko Makito is the Managing Director and Co-Owner of the Pearl Falco Corporation. Having now taken the helm of the family business, Maiko is determined to re-invigorate the pearl industry and the local economy in Ise Shima.

Maiko said,  “I was surprised how so many people love to visit Japan, but practically no one has ever heard of Ise Shima, and the fact that Ise Shima is the birthplace of the cultured pearl. I was also surprised to learn how so few people know how to differentiate or determine the intrinsic value of cultured pearls. Through this competition, I hope more people will get to know more about pearls and beautiful Ise Shima.”

Akoya pearls have a timeless beauty, derived from hard work, love and devotion. A 130 year old heritage. Ise Shima is the origin of the world’s pearl industry. Not just pearl cultivation – Ise Shima supports harvesting, cleaning, processing, grading and crafting, all of which is still done by hand. The grand tradition of the Japanese pearl industry is alive and well, began and remains here in Ise Shima, Japan.

A Personal Message from Maiko

Frankly speaking, I had no intention of taking over Pearl Falco .., but now the Pearl of Hope Challenge is my passion and dream that makes it so worthwhile for myself and the Pearl Falco Family. We wish to share our experience and devotion so that more people appreciate the value of pearls and continue to treasure pearl jewelry in their lives. Our mission is to pass this great cultural tradition and artform onto future generations.

For me personally, the “challenge” has only just begun. Will you join me?
